Ottavio Mammi is a FIDE Master: only the third ever from the Modena area
The title was ratified after his result at the First Saturday in Budapest: the Club 64 player, born in 2009, is only the third FIDE Master ever from the Modena area, after Maurizio Tirabassi and Gabriele Franchini.
Modena, 14 September 2026 — A new milestone for Club 64's youth academy. Ottavio Mammi, born in 2009, is officially a FIDE Master: FIDE ratified the title yesterday, following the result he achieved in early August at the First Saturday in Budapest, where the young Italian beat, among others, the Mexican FIDE Master Fogo Esquivel. One fact outweighs every other: Mammi is only the third FIDE Master in the history of chess in Modena since international titles were introduced back in 1950, after Maurizio Tirabassi of Carpi (also a correspondence Grandmaster) and Gabriele Franchini, now Club 64's coach and president.
His progress has been steady: Italian Under 10 Champion in 2019, he is now a regular in the club's Serie A1 team, which won its group in 2025 and finished third in 2026. The club's first team plays in Serie Master, and this year it took third place at the finals in Boario.
The title now opens ambitious prospects: earning a place in Club 64's Serie Master team. The road remains demanding, because at that level even the first reserves are International Masters rated above 2400: it will take a significant rise in his rating.
"At this age results have to be handled with balance," Franchini points out. "Ottavio has what it takes to keep climbing."
