CUS UniMORE, Club 64-branded, wins the National University Championship!
On Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 June 2023, the first edition of the chess tournament within the National University Championship was held in San Severino Marche, in the province of Macerata, organised by FederCUSI and the Italian Chess Federation, with the collaboration of the local sports associations “Barbara Carboni” and “Torre Smeducci”. Ten teams organised by the respective CUS of eight universities did battle, in a four-board team tournament, played over five rounds with a time control set at 30 minutes with a 30-second increment per move.
The winning team, which won the gold medal and the national title, was Cus MoRe, representing the sports centre of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The line-up was made up of Francesco Ferraguti (Engineering student), Luca Ballotti (Computer Science, captain), Luca Tazzioli (Mathematics), all playing for the ASD “Club 64” of Modena, and Lara Scagliarini (Engineering), of the ”Arrocco Chess Club” of Rome.
The Cus MoRe team dominated the tournament, winning all five matches and obtaining a perfect score of 10 team points out of 10 and 18.5 individual points out of 20 (only three draws were conceded to the opponents). Modena - Reggio Emilia benefited not only from being the favourite, but also from the excellent form of its players, who occupied all four top positions in the board standings.
Worth highlighting is the significant support of CUS Modenese / Reggiano, which invested a great deal in the team's success, offering support in every possible way to the athletes. This commitment was rewarded not only in the chess tournament, but also in men's volleyball (with the confirmation of the previous year's win), in taekwondo and in four athletics disciplines.
