FIDE Master Andrea Cocchi from Bologna wins the 20th Modena Rapid Open 2016, taking the tournament with 7.5 points out of 9 and finishing half a point ahead of his closest pursuers. Second overall was another Bologna player, FIDE Master Michelangelo Scalcione (7 points). On the lowest step of the podium was FIDE Master Valerio Luciani from Verona (7 points). In fourth place was Candidate Master Marco Campini from Ferrara (7 points). Only fifth (penalised by the tie-break) was the title holder WGM Olga Zimina, also with 7 points out of 9 in the final standings. The tournament recorded a slight increase in participants compared to the 2015 edition: 71 players present compared to 64 in the previous edition. The tournament once again ranks among the very top in Emilia Romagna and nationally in terms of number of participants. As is tradition, at the end of the tournament the prize-giving of the 2016 Regional Rapid Circuit was held and the special prizes were awarded to the athletes of the Region who distinguished themselves during the year. Sincere thanks to the San Faustino sports club, which made the main hall available for the tournament, to the arbiters Angelo Mancini, Antonio Sfera and Fabrizio Ballotti and to the invaluable helpers Di Trapani, Marinelli, Panini, Marchi and Vergara. The invitation is of course renewed to all chess players for the 2017 edition!
