Lorenzo Lucchi wins the 17th Modena Rapid Open

Candidate Master Lorenzo Lucchi of Rimini wins the 17th Modena Rapid Open 2013. Lucchi took the tournament with 7.5 points out of 9 and finished ahead of FIDE Master Artem Gilevych, Master Giuseppe Coratella and the very young Luca Moroni Jr from Milan (born 2000), who finished the tournament with 7 points. The top Club 64 finishers were Michelangelo Scalcione and Olga Zimina (first among the women), both on 6.5 points. Despite the drop in participation compared with the 2012 edition (which reflects a general trend in Italy and in the Region), the tournament recorded a fair number of participants (81 players present) and turned out to be the third rapid tournament in Italy in 2013 by number of entries (after Fano and Crema). As is traditional, at the end of the tournament the prize-giving of the 2013 Regional Rapid Circuit was held and the special prizes were awarded to the Region's athletes who distinguished themselves during the year. Many friends were present, including Marco Borsari, Giulio Calavalle and Tosca Proietti. Sincere thanks to the Polisportiva San Faustino, which made its main hall available for the tournament, and to arbiters Angelo Mancini, Antonio Sfera, Graziano Ballista and Sergio Pomante, who officiated the event with their usual availability and professionalism.
