GM Jha Sriram wins the Maranello Closed Tournament

Grandmaster Jha Sriram wins the 1st "Città di Maranello" Closed Tournament with 7 points out of 9, ahead of his wife IM Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi and GM Vladimir Petkov, top seed of the event. Vijayalakshmi finished with 6.5 points out of 9, the same as Petkov, but prevailed on tie-break. Fourth overall and first among the Italians, with 5.5/9, was the young Giuseppe Lettieri, who unfortunately missed the norm by a hair (squandering a large advantage against Le Ruyet in the 9th round and, sadly, saying goodbye to the norm with one round to go). As partial consolation for Lettieri, in this tournament he nevertheless reached 2400 Elo points in the live rating, which will allow him to have the IM title ratified directly once he achieves his third norm. An excellent tournament for Alessio Viviani (the lowest by Elo rating), who after a difficult start scored 2.5 points in the last 5 rounds, finishing in 9th place and gaining Elo points. The deputy mayor of Maranello, Giorgio Gibellini, attended the prize-giving ceremony on 23 June. The Municipality of Maranello, to which Club 64 extends its heartfelt thanks, supported and sponsored the event. All the players were particularly satisfied with the tournament and with the pleasant atmosphere felt throughout the week. Sincere thanks also to the impeccable arbiting staff, made up of chief arbiter Roberto Ricca and deputy Giorgio Perrone. The experience was very positive and we hope to be able to offer an even higher-level tournament in 2014 as well.
