Andrea Sacchetti provincial champion 2014

1N Andrea Sacchetti of Formigine surprisingly wins the Modena provincial championship and becomes 2014 provincial champion. The winner finished the tournament with 4 points out of 5 and finished ahead on tie-break of the young Francesco Ferraguti, who thus becomes provincial vice-champion. Sacchetti enters the roll of honour of this tournament for the first time, taking to Formigine the title won last year by the young CM Davide Di Trapani, who did not take part in the tournament this year. A real pity was the withdrawal from the tournament of the very young Cesare Wang (born 2002!) after the third round. Cesare was in fact leading the tournament with a perfect score, having beaten far higher-rated opponents in the first 3 rounds. One point in the last 2 rounds would probably have been enough for Cesare to win the tournament. Unfortunately a bout of flu on Saturday night forced him to withdraw from the tournament. With the points collected, Cesare should nevertheless have achieved a prestigious promotion to the 1N category. The 2014 edition of the Provincial Championship was dedicated to the memory of our friend Mario Viola, who passed away a few weeks before the tournament. Viola won this tournament in 2004 and the Modena provincial championship will be dedicated to his memory in future editions as well. His daughter Sara, his wife Lina and his brother Ugo attended the prize-giving ceremony, and were presented with two commemorative plaques for Mario, signed on the back by his closest friends. The speech by his brother Ugo after the presentation of the plaque in memory of his brother was touching and meaningful.
