Chess at school — the MeMo project
Chess at school is the programme Club 64 offers Modena's schools through the catalogue of school itineraries run by MeMo, the Comune di Modena's education centre.
It is designed for primary classes, first to fifth year, and lower secondary classes, first to third year. There are seven one-hour lessons, in the classroom and with the teacher present: the instructor alternates explanations on a wall chessboard with group exercises and games, in language suited to the children's age. The club brings the boards and pieces; an interactive whiteboard helps.
It starts from the rules and how the pieces move and reaches the first ideas of tactics and strategy: by the end the children can play a correct game. Along the way they train logic, attention, memory and planning, and learn to respect the rules and their opponent.
The cost is 280 euros per class. Schools enrol from their MeMo account; the club then contacts the school to set the dates.
